Women and Child Ministry led by Maneka Gandhi, on 24th Jul, 2017, launched an online platform enabling female employees of the Central government to file sexual harassment at work place complaints online. The platform is called the ‘She-Box’ viz., (sexual harassment electronic box).
The Union Minister, Maneka Gandhi said “We are going to soon conduct a national survey to assess the nature and magnitude of sexual harassment at the workplace.”
“To begin with, central government women employees can file complaints, but we are going to widen the ambit to include the private sector as well,” she added.
She also said, that they need to make a few changes in their online interface, and once that’s done they’ll make it possible for employees from private sector to get benefit of the platform too. Gandhi instructed the officials to make the platform as ‘interactive” as possible.
“We hope our ICCs work in such a way that hopefully , we won’t have the need for using such a platform to seek redressal. Also, we have had an e-box facility for the last one year for children to file complaints anonymously . We have received hundreds of cases through that,” Maneka said.
The Union government has a strength of 30.87 lakh employees. According to the census of central government employees of 2011, women constitute 10.93% of the total force. The decision to host an online platform for sexual harassment cases was taken by the WCD ministry last October after the minister received complaints from women employees in various ministries. The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 mandates that all organisations that employ more than 10 workers must constitute an Internal Complaint Committee (ICC), to look into any complaints and allegations of sexual harassment.
One of the many reasons of why this platform has been launched is to get speedy redressal to the aggrieved complaintnants. Monitoring and keeping records will also be easier to do online.
We hope for a day, when none of the employees irrespective of their gender need to file complaints relating to sexual harassment at work place.
