The Supreme Court today ordered death penalty for the four convicts of December 16 Nirbhaya gang rape case. Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh have been slapped with a death sentence for the henious crime they committed 4 years- 4 months- and 18 days back.
Earlier, the trial court also had sentenced all the four convicts to the death penalty.
In the chilling winters of New Delhi (December 2012), 6 people gang raped a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern in a moving bus. The woman succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29, 2012.
One of the accused, Ram Singh hanged himself in prison, while another person, who was a juvenile at the time of the crime, was convicted and served the maximum sentence of three years in a correctional home.
As per CNN News report, “The Supreme Court’s verdict is not only Nirbhaya and her family’s win but for all. The judgement is welcome”, says Swati Maliwal, DCW Chief.
Maneka Gandhi says, “Happy that SC has reconfirmed the death sentence of the rapists. India has zero tolerance for rape, mindset changing.”
It was a great decision. A landmark verdict, says Kiran Bedi.
SC confirmed findings of the trial court and Delhi High Court against the four convicts in the case. And said, all four deserved death penalty. Supreme Court called it a barbaric act and the verdict was greeted with applause in the court room following pronouncement.
AP Singh, Lawyer of convicts said, “Justice not done, we will file review petition after reading the order. (Samaaj mein message dene ke liye kisi ko phansi nahi de sakte, human rights ki dhajiyaan udd gayi).”
This is a victory. Not for the family of the victim, but a victory of our nation as whole.
“It’s a victory for my family, I am very happy with the judgement,” says Nirbhaya’s father to ANI.
Nibhaya’s mother reacts, says, “justice has finally been done.”, as per TV reports.
Our faith in our jurisdiction has finally been restored,although it took 4 years.
