Yet another serious rail accident has happened in Khatauli, Muzaffarnagar district, a few kilometres from Meerut. Train no. 18477, Puri-Haridwar-Kalinga-Utkal express, headed from Puri to Haridwar derailed in Khatauli when it was almost near to its destination. The accident took place around 5:46 pm today evening i.e. on 19 Aug 2017.
14 coaches of the train derailed one of them crashing into a house on the sides of the tracks and two of them climbed one over the other.
Railway minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu has ordered an inquiry into the accident to ascertain its cause. He tweeted that strict action will be taken against any discrepancy found. A team of ATS of the police has been rushed to the site to conduct a preliminary enquiry and check for the terror angle into the accident. One could expect terrorism to be a cause due to several incident that took place back in time. Railways tend to be the most vulnerable for terror attacks especially in India as the railways are the lifeline of the Indian transport system.
The train was to reach Haridwar at 9pm on Saturday starting from Puri last night at 9pm. Routes of other trains have been diverted through Shamli.
Local residents of khatauli were first to reach the aciddent spot and aid help as much as they could. It was only later that the authorities could reach there. Volunteers and medical vehicles have been sent from Meerut. Injured have been admitted to the hospitals in Meerut and Muzafffarnagar. NDRF team with rescue dogs have already been sent to the site. It has been almost 5 hours and the rescue operations are still going on but still there seems to be a long way to go as the accident is major enough for rescue opertaions to go this longer.
For as yet, the cause of the derailment is not known. According to reports, 14 people have lost their lives due to the accident and 65 are claimed to be injured. The nimber is definitely going to increase but we hope it not.
Ex-gratia of 3.5 lacs for the families of deceased has alredy been announced.Ex-gratia of 50,000 for severly injured has also been announced.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on this accident and exclaimed that his sympathy is with the familes of deceased. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has ensured to direct every help possible.
